Hirado Thousand Lantern Festival

木ヶ津千灯篭春まつり

Hirado Thousand Lantern Festival See Fumonji temple adorned with light
Date
2016 dates - April 4th and 5th

OVERVIEW

For two days in April, you can witness the unique sight of Fumonji temple illuminated with 100 stone lanterns, and 4,000 bamboo lanterns. The festival in the small town of Kigatsu on Hirado Island, is to celebrate the renewal of spring and each bamboo lantern is hand carved by the local community.

Walk the winding cobbled path to the temple and enjoy the distinctly cultural and serene atmosphere. A variety of small food stalls border the main stage, which hosts live music. Pick yourself up a few yakitori skewers and say “konbanwa” to the locals- they are really friendly.

The event lasts from roughly midday to 9:00pm each night, with 7:00pm attracting the highest number of visitors. If you arrive early, head over to see Jigenzakura, a 140 year old giant sakura tree. With a crown width of 20 metres, the sight becomes even more spectacular when it is illuminated at night.
